Last Game Recap

Canada:
Canada launched their tournament with a commanding 6-2 victory over Slovakia on Saturday. Despite outshooting their opponents 60-7, the game was tied 2-2 heading into the third period. Goals from B.C.-born defenders Danica Maynard and Chloe Primerano within a span of 2:11 rejuvenated the Canadian offense. Maxine Cimoroni starred with a goal and an assist, while Sara Manness and Caileigh Tiller each contributed two assists.

Switzerland:
Switzerland endured a heartbreaker, falling 2-1 in overtime to Czechia. Defender Sonja Inkamp scored early in the third period, but Czechia equalized with just over two minutes remaining and secured the win in overtime. Goaltender Amaya Iseli delivered an outstanding performance, stopping 36 shots.

The Last Encounter

Canada and Switzerland last clashed in the quarterfinals of the 2024 tournament in Zug, where Canada secured a dominant 6-0 win. Sienna D’Alessandro led the charge with two goals, Gracie Graham tallied a goal and two assists, and Chloe Primerano contributed three assists to her already record-setting stats. Canadian goaltender Rhyah Stewart faced only three shots in a lopsided 54-3 effort.

Players to Watch

Maxine Cimoroni (Canada):
Cimoroni continues to shine as a key player for Canada. The Toronto native was pivotal in Canada’s opening win and has had an exceptional season leading into the tournament. She led Canada with five points during the summer series against the U.S., earned MVP honors at the U18 National Women’s Championship in November, and currently ranks fifth in OWHA U22 Elite scoring with 32 points in 20 games for the Mississauga Hurricanes.

Sonja Inkamp (Switzerland):
Inkamp’s endurance and skill make her a standout for Switzerland. The 17-year-old logged an impressive 29:10 of ice time against Czechia, the most of any player in the game. Inkamp, competing in her third U18 Women’s Worlds, has gained valuable experience in Switzerland’s Women’s League, playing for HC Ambri-Piotta and ZSC Lions. Despite Switzerland fielding a young roster, Inkamp’s leadership and versatility will be vital.

A Look Back at History

Canada has dominated in their four previous meetings with Switzerland, outscoring their opponents 44-3. The first encounter dates back to 2009, where Canada cruised to a 16-1 win. Casandra Langan made history in that game, becoming the first Canadian to score four goals in a single U18 Women’s Worlds game.

All-time record: Canada leads 4-0
Goals for Canada: 44
Goals for Switzerland: 3

What to Expect

Canada’s depth and offensive firepower, combined with strong defensive performances, will be challenging for the Swiss to counter. However, Switzerland’s resilience, anchored by Iseli’s goaltending and Inkamp’s leadership, could make this an intriguing matchup.

The puck drops at 1:30 p.m. ET in Vantaa, Finland. Fans can expect high-energy action as these teams battle for position in Group B.
