NEW MOVIES TO STREAM SEPT. 9-15
— Alex Garland’s “Civil War” finally hits MAX on Friday. This film features Kirsten Dunst as a photojournalist caught in a messy war dividing America. She reluctantly brings along an aspiring photographer, played by Cailee Spaeny. Together with an editor (Stephen McKinley Henderson) and a reporter (Wagner Moura), they embark on a risky trip to Washington, D.C., to interview the president (Nick Offerman), who’s become a tyrant in his third term, attacking citizens and shutting out the press. My review called it a haunting experience filled with smart ideas and strong performances. Definitely worth your time.
— Joey King stars in Netflix’s version of Scott Westerfeld’s “Uglies.” This story takes place in a future where everyone gets cosmetic surgery by age 16. The film comes out Friday. McG directs it, and King’s character stumbles into a rebellion against this forced beauty norm. Chase Stokes from “Outer Banks” plays her best friend.
— Bill Skarsgård is on a vengeance trip in “Boy Kills World,” launching on Hulu Friday. Directed by Moritz Mohr, this violent flick features Famke Janssen as the woman who hurt his family. Variety critic Owen Gleiberman noted: “It’s twisted but entertaining in its revenge-horror flair.”
NEW MUSIC TO STREAM SEPT. 9-15
— Back in 2006, Snow Patrol released their big hit album “Eyes Open,” with the song “Chasing Cars.” Since then, they’ve put out three albums and are almost at four! On Friday, they drop “The Forest Is the Path,” their first new album in seven years. Expect anthemic pop-rock as they explore themes of love & loss through songs like “All,” “The Beginning,” and “This Is the Sound Of Your Voice.”
— In Jordan Peele’s sci-fi thriller from 2022, “NOPE,” one character wears a Jesus Lizard shirt which might surprise you! The film showcases other iconic band shirts too such as Rage Against the Machine and Butthole Surfers among others. This weekend marks the release of a new album called “Rack” from Jesus Lizard — their intensity surely hasn’t faded since they last put out music back in ’98.
NEW SHOWS TO STREAM SEPT. 9-15
— Hallmark recently introduced Hallmark+ on Tuesday with two fresh series — the scripted drama “The Chicken Sisters” & the unscripted series “Celebrations with Lacey Chabert.” If you love Hallmark movies, you know Chabert has starred in over 30 films! She brings her party-planning skills to “Celebrations,” surprising deserving folks with joyful celebrations planned by her team. Meanwhile, “The Chicken Sisters” features Schuyler Fisk & Lea Thompson as staff at competing chicken shops in a small town; this eight-episode series is based on a novel of the same name.
— Natasha Rothwell from “Insecure” created & stars in Hulu’s new comedy titled “How to Die Alone.” She plays Mel – single & struggling – who decides after her close brush with death to pursue her dreams without holding back. Rothwell has worked on this project for eight years and told The AP it represents her most personal work yet; she identifies strongly with Mel saying there’s plenty of overlap between them! The show premieres Friday.
— Shailene Woodley joins DeWanda Wise & Betty Gilpin in Starz’s drama “Three Women.” It centers on entrepreneur Sloane, homemaker Lina & student Maggie discovering their power & making tough choices while being interviewed by writer Gia (Woodley). It’s based on Lisa Taddeo’s popular book from 2019 and hits screens Friday.
— On Sunday, Sylvester Stallone’s second season of “Tulsa King” begins streaming on Paramount+. He plays Dwight Manfredi—a mafia boss sent to Tulsa after spending 25 years in prison—to set up his own crime operation! Taylor Sheridan from “Yellowstone” created this gripping show.
