The Bulldogs (1-0) started their season strong with a dominant 101-63 victory over No. 8 Baylor on Monday. Leading the team, Nolan Hickman scored 17 points as Gonzaga hit 40 of 71 shots (56.3%), including 13 successful 3-pointers. Their defense limited Baylor to just 23 of 62 (37.1%) shooting from the field and a cold 3 of 21 (14.3%) from beyond the arc. This decisive 38-point win set a new record as Gonzaga’s largest margin of victory over a top-10 team and became the biggest margin by any team in a season opener against a top-10 opponent in AP Poll history.
Arizona State (2-0) opened its season with a 55-48 win over Idaho State on Tuesday. Alston Mason led the scoring with 14 points, and the Sun Devils sealed the game with a 10-4 run after falling behind with five minutes left in the second half. Despite hitting just 20 of 55 shots (36%) and making 7 of 24 attempts (29.2%) from the 3-point line, they managed to close out the victory.
The Sun Devils followed up with an 81-74 victory over Santa Clara in Las Vegas on Friday. BJ Freeman led the team with 17 points off the bench, while freshman Joson Sanon contributed 11 points, including two 3-pointers. Fellow freshman Jayden Quaintance led the game with 12 rebounds and added three blocked shots. Quaintance is among the candidates for the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award for top college center, while Freeman is a contender for the Julius Erving Award, recognizing the top small forward.
Sunday’s game will be the first-ever meeting between Gonzaga and Arizona State, kicking off a home-and-home series arranged this offseason. Gonzaga will make the trip to Tempe, Arizona, next season.
