Monty Williams, Former NBA Coach of the Year, Joins TMI Episcopal as Head Basketball Coach in Texas

Monty Williams, the NBA’s 2021-22 Coach of the Year, has taken the role of head basketball coach at TMI Episcopal in San Antonio, Texas, where he will coach his son, Elijah Williams.

Williams enjoyed a nine-year playing career in the NBA, representing teams like the New York Knicks, San Antonio Spurs, Denver Nuggets, Orlando Magic, and Philadelphia 76ers. The 6-foot-8 forward averaged 6.3 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game over 456 appearances.

After five seasons as an assistant with the Portland Trail Blazers, Williams became head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans in 2010, achieving a 173-221 record and making the playoffs twice in five years.

Following his departure from the Pelicans, he served as an associate head coach with the Oklahoma City Thunder and later joined the Philadelphia 76ers as an assistant coach for the 2018-19 season.

In 2019, Williams took the helm of the Phoenix Suns, where he achieved a 221-115 record and led the team to its first NBA Finals appearance since 1993. In 2022, he earned NBA Coach of the Year honors for a 64-18 season but was dismissed in 2023 after a playoff exit. He briefly coached the Detroit Pistons, posting a 14-68 record before parting ways with the team.

TMI Episcopal finished 23-19 last season and reached the TAPPS Class 5A state semifinals. Alongside Elijah, the roster includes the sons of NBA legends, with Tim Duncan’s son, Dra Duncan, and Bruce Bowen’s sons, Ojani and Ozmel Bowen. Williams’ younger son, Micah Williams, is also enrolled at the school as an eighth grader.

Williams was part of the San Antonio Spurs’ coaching staff during their 2005 NBA Championship run, working with both Duncan and Bowen during that time.
