Virginia High School Football: Top 25 Rankings as of Nov. 5

With the Virginia state tournament approaching, the Nov. 5 On3 Massey Ratings reflect recent shifts in the top 25 high school football rankings, following the first weekend of November games. The leading teams are solidifying their spots just 11 days before the regional quarterfinals begin.

The On3 Massey Ratings, a system dating back to the BCS era, ranks teams by evaluating factors like game results, strength of schedule, and scoring margins. Here’s a breakdown of the top teams and their performances:

1. Maury
Despite scoring fewer points than in previous games (49), the Commodores secured a victory over Churchland, maintaining their position as Virginia’s top-ranked team. They also boast the state’s highest-scoring offense and will face Granby on Nov. 8.

2. Phoebus
Although their shutout streak ended, the Phantoms reclaimed second place with a win over Warwick on Nov. 2, extending their unbeaten record to nine games. They’ll wrap up regional play against Denbigh on Nov. 8.

3. Liberty Christian Academy
The Bulldogs, now 8-0, shut out Brookville in their latest game, marking four straight games of holding opponents to seven points or less. They possess Virginia’s second-best offense and aim to stay unbeaten against Jefferson Forest on Nov. 8.

4. Oscar Smith
The Tigers dropped slightly in rankings but remain undefeated after a strong win over Hickory. Although they allowed their season-high points against Hickory, Oscar Smith’s third-ranked defense will look to dominate Western Branch on Nov. 8.

5. Battlefield
The Bobcats have yet to allow more than eight points in any game this season, continuing their streak with a road win over Osbourn for a 9-0 record. Battlefield will complete conference play on Nov. 8 against Patriot.

6. Madison
The Warhawks preserved their perfect record by defeating Oakton, limiting the Cougars to six points, which lifted Madison’s defensive ranking to eighth. They’ll close out conference play versus Centreville on Nov. 8 before heading into the playoffs.

7. Dinwiddie
The Generals are on a six-game win streak since their loss to Maury. Their latest was a dominant 56-0 shutout of Meadowbrook, their second scoreless victory this season. Dinwiddie faces Matoaca next on Nov. 8.

8. Woodberry Forest
The Tigers stayed undefeated with a commanding win over Fork Union Military Academy, scoring a season-high 51 points and limiting Fork Union to 12. Their next game is on the road against Episcopal.

9. Highland Springs
The Springers, Virginia’s top defensive team, saw a five-game win streak end with a close loss to Varina. Highland Springs can rebound with a win over Hanover on Nov. 8.

10. Varina
Since their season-opening loss to Indian River, the Blue Devils have won seven in a row, recently edging out Highland Springs. Varina looks to continue their momentum with a road game against Patrick Henry on Nov. 8 before the tournament begins.
