Week 10 Texas High School Football Highlights: Key Battles and Title Races in 5A and 6A Districts

As Week 10 of Texas high school football unfolds, here are five major storylines to keep an eye on.

1. District 4-5A Division II Title Race Heats Up
Prosper Walnut Grove (7-1, 5-1 in District 4-5A Div. II) has emerged as a strong contender in just its second football season. Walnut Grove claimed the top spot in the district after last week’s victory over Lovejoy (5-3, 5-1), giving them a crucial tiebreaker. This week, they face a formidable challenge against Melissa (5-3, 4-2). A win would secure Walnut Grove’s first district title, while a loss would leave the district race wide open heading into the final week.

2. Spotlight on Dallas-Area 6A Quarterbacks
The Dallas area has seen eight quarterbacks surpass the 2,000-yard passing mark, but the race for top passer appears to center on Duncanville’s Keelon Russell, Richardson Pearce’s Presley Harper, and Princeton’s Marcus Flowers.

  • Harper leads with 2,583 yards, 29 touchdowns, and only two interceptions. His next two games, against Irving Nimitz and Richardson Berkner, will test his consistency.
  • Russell sits close behind with 2,486 yards and an impressive 73% completion rate. His upcoming games are against Mesquite and Cedar Hill, two teams known for their defensive prowess.
  • Flowers ranks third with 2,409 yards but has thrown 10 interceptions, the highest among the top yardage leaders. He will face tough matchups against Prosper and McKinney Boyd.

3. Can West Mesquite Keep Its Perfect Record?
West Mesquite has achieved an 8-0 start with a remarkable 305-point differential, setting the stage for a showdown against Carrollton Newman Smith (7-1, 6-0) for the top spot in District 6-5A Division I. West Mesquite, coming off a 48-21 win over Carrollton Creekview, will need another strong showing to maintain its undefeated streak. Meanwhile, Newman Smith rides a seven-game winning streak with a defense that allowed only 95 total yards in its last game against Bryan Adams.

4. The Race for 6A’s Top Wide Receiver
North Crowley’s Quentin Gibson has been a breakout star, leading all Dallas-area 6A receivers with 1,102 yards and 22 touchdowns. However, Southlake Carroll’s Brock Boyd and Richardson’s Dameon Crowe aren’t far behind.

  • Gibson’s next matchups include Crowley and Mansfield, defenses known for limiting passing yards.
  • Boyd, with 1,000 yards, has only one game left against Keller Central.
  • Crowe, with 998 yards and averaging over 20 yards per reception, will play Lake Highlands and Irving MacArthur.

5. Battle for District 5-6A’s Second Seed
With Lewisville (5-3, 4-1 in District 5-6A) and Denton Guyer (6-2, 4-1) already playoff-bound, their upcoming matchup will determine the district’s second seed. Both teams have identical records, each having suffered a district loss to Coppell. Denton Guyer ranks 18th in rushing yards and scoring offense in the Dallas area, while Lewisville has the 16th-best scoring offense.
