Newburgh High School Cancels Remainder of Football Season Following Code of Conduct Violations

Newburgh Free Academy’s football season has been canceled after the Newburgh school district launched an investigation into reports of violent behavior in the team’s locker room.

The cancellation comes after the school’s homecoming festivities were abruptly called off last Friday. On Tuesday, Superintendent Dr. Jackielyn Manning Campbell confirmed that the entire season would not continue.

“While this decision is difficult, it’s necessary to gather all information, provide support to those affected, and hold those involved accountable,” Dr. Manning Campbell stated.

The alleged incident, which occurred on October 25, involved both JV and varsity players, leaving a varsity player injured. Eyewitness News sources indicate that what started as playful interactions escalated, with players reportedly throwing chairs, resulting in significant bruising for one student.

According to the district, the behavior violated the student code of conduct. Though non-sexual, the incident involved multiple individuals and was deemed serious enough to warrant a full investigation.

“I understand that some students and families may feel unfairly affected by the actions of a few,” Dr. Campbell said. “However, ensuring the safety and well-being of our students is my highest priority. The timing of this information was unfortunate, impacting other student activities and leading to the season’s cancellation. I am committed to a thorough and impartial investigation.”
