TikTok Trials AI-Generated Avatars for Profile Pictures

TikTok is experimenting with a new feature that allows users to create AI-generated avatars for their profile pictures, the company confirmed to CNN on Wednesday. This initiative aims to showcase the latest advancements in artificial intelligence to millions of users.

According to social media consultant Matt Navarra, who first reported the feature, it generates a stylized, illustrated version of the user based on an uploaded photo. However, the feature is currently in the early testing phase and is not widely accessible to TikTok users, with no specific timeline announced for a broader rollout.

A TikTok spokesperson shared, “We’re always exploring new ways to add value to the community and enhance the TikTok experience, as we strive to create a safe space that entertains, inspires creativity, and influences culture. In select regions, we’re testing a novel method for users to create and share profile pictures with the TikTok community.”

While AI-generated images have surged in popularity online, some tools have sparked concerns among privacy advocates, digital artists, and users regarding issues like image sexualization, skin tone alterations, and body image distortions.
